What is EGT?

Ergothioneine (EGT) is a special antioxidant amino acid substance discovered in the last century. EGT has been proven to accumulate and be stored in various human cells and tissues at high concentrations (100 μM to 2 mM). However, the human body cannot synthesize EGT, so it must be obtained from the diet. Edible mushrooms are the main dietary source of EGT.

Why is EGT so unique?

In a major study conducted in 2005, it was discovered that EGT in mammals is absorbed by a special EGT transporter protein (ETT) named OCTN1 (encoded by the SLC22A4 gene), and OCTN1 is present in almost all tissues of the human body. The existence of a special transporter of EGT makes it highly bioavailable and retainable, suggesting that humans can benefit from EGT remaining in tissues.
